“I understand competition very well having worked for the top technology companies like IBM, Motorola and Microsoft. Such companies know that the products they provide must excel because domestic and global competitors are always there to provide substitutes if they fall short. Similarly, the marketable skills of our students are ‘products’ in a competitive global marketplace. Without an excellent education, our students will not be able to compete. Through The Broad Residency I can help our students become and stay competitive.”

Donald Mitchell currently serves as the special assistant for management systems in the Office of the Deputy Secretary of Education at the U.S. Department of Education. In this role, Mitchell develops and executes effective management approaches including: project managing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Grant programs through the rules making process, facilitating development and quarterly tracking of the public facing High Priority Performance Goals, and assisting in managing alignment and development of operational processes. During his Residency, Mitchell served as special projects officer for Prince George's County Public Schools, a district with more than 135,000 students and 200 schools. Prior to joining the Residency, he worked at Microsoft Inc. as a group product manager. In this role, he developed the cornerstone for the new customer centric licensing model for the company’s billion volume licensing channel. Previously, he was a marketing manager for IBM’s microelectronics division, where he supported development of the division’s annual business plans and business segment strategies. Mitchell was also a director of product marketing for Motorola’s wireless accessories and peripherals group, where he managed a product and business development group and had responsibility for several mobile accessory product lines. He began his career as a software engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation.
